Why Do Fabricators & Builders Need Plasma-Cut Steel?

Our plasma cutting equipment produces structural holes with virtually no taper and improved roundness, bringing plasma-cut holes much closer to “bolt-ready” quality. This means less drilling and secondary processing steps, leading to reduced time, labor, and costs. In other words, Service Steel Warehouse delivers plasma cutting services for projects that require speed, repeatability, and clean fit-up.

Plasma Cutting Services for Steel

Our PythonX® equipment uses modern plasma torch technology for unmatched precision and cleanliness that ensures your parts arrive requiring minimal cleanup. On top of this, your parts can also be delivered with scribed markings, such as part numbers, layout marks for welded-on components, and more. The combination of reduced drilling time (and cost), better throughput on complex details, cleaner parts, and optional scribed markings makes Service Steel Warehouse a leading destination for plasma cut steel procurement, so call our team to request a free quote today. Learn how this system factors into standards like AISC here.

We Work Directly From Your CNC Files

Send us your DSTV/NC1 files from Advance Steel, Tekla, or SDS/2, and we’ll handle the rest. Holes, copes, slots, and scribed markings are cut directly from your model — no manual layout, no redrawing. Members ship back coped, slotted, and plasma-cut with clean, bolt-ready holes. Our high-definition plasma cutting process produces structural holes with minimal taper and improved roundness, meaning your steel arrives requiring little to no cleanup or secondary drilling. Piece marks, layout lines, and assembly references are already scribed on the steel — exactly as detailed, ready for fit-up. Not working from NC1 files? We also accept DXF files and dimensioned drawings.

Plasma Cutting FAQs

Beyond holes, our plasma cutting systems can perform slots, copes, complex and detailed cutting, and marking ports. When your CNC files include the right information, we can deliver parts with scribed markings such as part numbers, layout marks, piece marks, and more to support fit-up and assembly.

Yes. Our equipment and provided services are positioned for exactly this kind of mixed-detail structural work. We can process common structural shapes (beams, channels, angles, tubing, merchants, etc.) and can perform a range of cut features like holes, slots, copes, marking, and more. This consolidates multiple operations into a single CNC workflow, reducing manual layout, rehandling, and rework for builders and other customers.

True Hole Technology is a set of automated plasma-cutting processes that are part of Hypertherm SureCut, designed to produce structural bolt holes with significantly improved quality. It does this by almost completely eliminating hole taper and improving roundness, which is crucial to maintain downstream time and cost savings (via minimizing additional processing). True Hole delivers bolt-ready hole quality across mild steel up to 1” thick and with diameter-to-thickness ratios from 2:1 down to 1:1.

We accept DSTV/NC1 files directly from structural detailing software, including Advance Steel, Tekla Structures, and SDS/2. If your detailer has already modeled the connections, holes, copes, and slots, we can work directly from those files. For shops that don’t have NC1 output available, we also accept DXF files and dimensioned drawings. Our team will confirm file compatibility and any specific export settings before your order is processed.

The ability to receive CNC-ready files and return finished members eliminates a full round of manual layout and secondary drilling for most structural packages. If you’re already detailing in Advance Steel, Tekla, or SDS/2, your files are ready to send as-is.

True Hole is often used specifically to reduce or eliminate drilling as a secondary step. That said, additional drilling or reaming requirements will depend on the combination of project tolerance requirements, material thickness, hole size, code-driven surface requirements, connection type, and loading conditions. In simpler terms, most True Hole structural bolt-hole use cases can move forward without drilling, but some jobs may still call for additional processing to fit certain engineering requirements.

Yes, our plasma-cut holes can align with AISC requirements when produced to the applicable surface and dimensional expectations (and when connection and loading conditions allow). In fact, PythonX’s Guide to Plasma Cutting in Codes and Standards specifically cites AISC 360 language.

The maximum piercing thickness of our plasma cutting tools is 1.75”, and the maximum edge-start thickness is 3”. Because of this, our plasma cutting services support heavy structural fabrication thicknesses with customizable edge quality requirements. Please talk to our team or request a quote to confirm specific max thickness and hole-quality expectations.
