Universal Mill Plates

Universal mill or “UM” plates are flat bars 9” and wider — universal milling produces a wider final product than standard flat bars. UM plates are often used to construct buildings, bridges, and for other general structural purposes. It’s recommended to use galvanized steel plates when accounting for corrosion or inclement weather, as they offer better resistance to these factors.

Service Steel Warehouse stocks a variety of ready-to-ship UM plates in standard sizes, as well as offers full-service processing capabilities, such as cutting to length and galvanizing.

Universal Mill Plate FAQs

A mill is a type of rotary cutting machine used to form various metal fabrications — a universal mill has a broader range of motion and operates on multiple axes.

Mill scale on a steel plate is a bluish-black coating that forms during the hot-rolling process and protects against corrosion. A layer of iron oxide, mill scale is the result of high-surface temperature and pressure applied to steel flat bars and can sometimes be confused with rust.

Technically, mill scale needs to be welded through to form an effective bond. Stick welding is an adequate technique that uses deoxidizers to penetrate the scale.
